How to Sell on Social Media: A 2026 Guide for Local Business

Most local businesses waste time on social media by treating it like a digital flyer. After generating over 40 million views for my startup, I learned the biggest lesson: you don't sell products on social media. You build an audience that wants to buy your products by earning their trust with content that consistently helps or entertains.

First, Build an Audience. Then, Sell.

Your first goal on social media is to build an audience, because nobody on Instagram or TikTok is looking for your ad. They're there to be entertained or learn something. Your job is to give them one of those two things, consistently. My personal rule is that TikTok is for discovery and Instagram is for sales. I use TikTok's insane reach to get in front of new people, then use Instagram's features to build a real relationship and eventually make a sale.

This doesn't happen overnight. It took me over a year of posting just to get my first video with 10,000 views. It took two years to crack 10,000 followers. Think of social media as a long-term investment that pays off months from now, not tomorrow. If you create content that genuinely helps or entertains people in your town, they'll remember you when they need what you're selling.

Your own face will sell better than your logo because people connect with people, not with brands. As a founder, dentist, consultant, or shop owner, you are your brand's single biggest asset.

I ran an experiment on my personal account (@brunokalil_). I posted a video breaking down the exact revenue and costs of my SaaS business. It was raw, a little vulnerable, and it blew up, getting over 120,000 views. People were hooked. Compare that to some generic "product feature" post that might get a few hundred views. This is the whole point of personal branding for founders: you build an audience around your own expertise and story, and that audience becomes your best customer base.

The Funnel: From Stranger to Customer

A social media sales funnel works by guiding a stranger to becoming a customer in three distinct stages, rather than just shouting "buy now."

  1. Top of Funnel (Getting Seen): The only goal here is to reach people who have no idea who you are. This is where you jump on trends, use entertaining formats, and talk about broad topics. For my old education app, a 12-second video on a trending audio got 1.7 million views on Instagram. It wasn't some deep educational masterpiece, but it put our profile in front of a ton of new people.
  2. Middle of Funnel (Earning a Follow): Now you have to give them a reason to stick around. This is where you provide actual value. Make 30-second to 2-minute videos that solve a specific problem or share a unique insight. For us, videos on "university curiosities" always did well, sometimes hitting 1.5 million views on TikTok. They were valuable and entertaining, which made us the go-to source in our niche.
  3. Bottom of Funnel (Making the Sale): This is where you finally sell, but it should be a small fraction of your content. Use Instagram Stories with a direct link, run a special offer, or just point people to your link in bio. You've already earned their trust, so the ask feels natural, not desperate.

How often should a local business post?

When you're starting out, go for quantity to figure out what works. I tell people to post one video a day until they're consistently getting over 500 views. The algorithm needs that data to find your audience. Once you hit that baseline, you can pull back to 3-4 higher-quality videos a week.

What metrics actually lead to sales?

Forget likes. They're a vanity metric. The numbers that actually drive reach—and sales—are the ones that tell the platform your content is keeping people on the app. After 40 million views, here's the hierarchy I've seen:

  1. Shares: Someone is literally telling their friends to check you out. This is gold.
  2. Saves: Someone finds your content so valuable they plan to come back to it. Huge signal.
  3. Comments: This creates a conversation and brings people back to your post via notifications.
  4. Likes: The weakest signal of them all. It's a passive, lazy tap.

If you have high engagement but low reach, your hook failed. The first 3 seconds didn't do their job, so the algorithm buried your video.

God, no. But you should pay attention to why trends work. They're just proven formats for grabbing attention. The trick is to adapt the format, not just copy the dance. Find a trending sound or video style and ask, "How can I use this to talk about my business?" I used to spend hours manually tracking viral videos in other countries and niches, then adapting them for my audience. That's how I stayed ahead of the curve.

Instagram or TikTok for my local business?

Use both, but start with one. If your business is visual and you want to build a tight community, start with Instagram. If you just want to maximize your chances of reaching a huge new audience fast, start with TikTok. Once you've got one down, just repurpose your best stuff for the other. According to Wyzowl's 2024 report, 91% of businesses use video for marketing, so you can't afford to sit this one out.

The System to Sell Without Spending All Week on Content

A reliable content system is the key to selling on social media without it becoming a full-time job. It used to be for me. A single video—from idea to posted—took me about 90 minutes. Now I can bang one out in 30.

The difference is having a system that does the grunt work. That's exactly why we built Dalea AI. It's not another generic text generator; it's a Social Media Agent that actually learns your business and helps you do the work.

  1. Strategy First: Before you post a thing, Dalea checks out your profile, your competitors, and your niche to build a content strategy that makes sense for you. It gives you the exact content pillars to focus on.
  2. Endless Ideas: Instead of doomscrolling for inspiration, Dalea gives you a personalized feed of viral videos from your niche and a weekly brainstorm of ideas you can shoot right away. It's the automated version of the painful manual process I did for years.
  3. Scripts That Work: A great idea with a bad script is worthless. Dalea's AI Script Generator writes complete video scripts—hook, body, CTA—based on formats that are proven to get views. It takes you from a blank page to a finished script in seconds.
  4. Simple Editing: Once you shoot the video on your phone, you can use Dalea for simple cuts, captions, and zooms. No need to learn some complicated software. For more official tips, you can check out Instagram's official business resources.

This isn't about an AI replacing you. It's about giving you a system so you can get your time back. You're still the expert, you're still the face of the business. The AI just handles the grunt work—the strategy, the ideas, the scriptwriting—that used to eat up my entire day.

If you're a founder who knows you need to be on social but doesn't have 10 hours a week to waste, this is the system. You can get a free profile analysis and content strategy just by signing up. If you like it, it's $9.90 a month. Stop posting digital flyers and start building an audience that actually wants to buy from you.
