Personal Branding for Founders: A Strategy to Attract Clients

Let me give it to you straight: your personal profile will always outperform your company's logo. I once got over 120,000 views on a single Reel just by opening up my SaaS revenue and costs—that one moment of transparency built more trust than a dozen polished corporate posts ever could. This is a lesson I learned by posting around 500 videos over three years to get 40 million views and grow the audience for my last startup, Fokvs, to 25k on Instagram and 11k on TikTok.

As a founder, you are the brand. Hiding behind a company logo is the slowest way to grow because people want to connect with other people, not an abstract entity. The goal isn't to become an "influencer" chasing vanity metrics, but to build a direct line of trust with the people who will actually buy from you.

Why Most Founders Fail at Personal Branding

Most founders fail at personal branding because they lack a real strategy, not because they lack effort. This leads to three common mistakes.

  1. Chasing the Wrong Metrics: They get obsessed with likes. Likes are vanity. The algorithm only cares about keeping users on the app. The metrics that actually matter are, in order: Shares, Saves, and Comments. My best videos, the ones that actually brought in followers and customers, always had the highest share and save rates, not the most likes. If your reach is low but engagement is high, your hook in the first 3-5 seconds is probably weak.

  2. Unrealistic Timelines: They expect instant results. Here’s the truth: it took me over a year of consistent posting to get my first video past 10,000 views. It took more than two years to hit 10,000 followers. Content is a long game. You have to be willing to invest for at least 3-6 months before you see any kind of real return.

  3. No Positioning Strategy: They post randomly. One day it's a quote card, the next a product feature, then a picture of their dog. This doesn't build an audience because no one knows what you're the go-to person for. You need a clear position that tells people what to expect.

A Founder's Positioning Strategy That Attracts Clients

A founder's positioning strategy that attracts clients is not complex, but it must be intentional. My entire system, which I eventually built Dalea AI to automate, focuses on three core elements: Pillars, Funnels, and Formats.

Step 1: Define Your Content Pillars

Defining your content pillars means choosing 3-4 core topics you will own, which should sit at the intersection of your expertise, your business goals, and what your ideal client actually cares about. For a founder, that might look like:

  • Pillar 1: Industry Insights: Your unique take on what's happening in your market.
  • Pillar 2: Behind the Business: Show the process, the struggles, the wins. My SaaS revenue video is a perfect example.
  • Pillar 3: Solve a Micro-Problem: Give away valuable advice that solves a small, specific problem for your target client.
  • Pillar 4: Personal Journey & Lessons: Share your story. People relate to the grind.

Step 2: Map Pillars to the Funnel

Mapping your pillars to the marketing funnel ensures you create different content for different stages of the customer journey, rather than making every post a sales pitch.

  • Top of Funnel (Awareness): The goal here is to reach new people. These are often short, entertaining videos that tap into trends. My most-viewed video ever was a 12-second trend video that got 1.7 million views. It didn't sell a thing, but it brought thousands of new eyeballs to my profile.
  • Middle of Funnel (Consideration): This is where you build authority and trust. These are longer videos (30 seconds to 2 minutes) that deliver real value, tied to your pillars. This is what turns viewers into followers.
  • Bottom of Funnel (Conversion): This is where you can finally talk about your product or service. This content works best in formats like Instagram Stories, where the audience is already bought in.

Step 3: Master 3-5 Formats

Mastering 3-5 content formats that you can produce consistently is more effective than trying to do every type of video. For me, short point-of-view (POV) trend videos and man-on-the-street interviews worked like crazy. Consistency is everything. Pick formats you won't hate creating every week.

Should I use my personal profile or create a new one?

Use your personal profile, or a professionally-branded personal one (e.g., FirstName.Founder). People follow people. A First Round Review study even shows how effective founder-led selling is in the early days. Your personal account has your history and connections. A company page starts from zero and feels corporate. Use the company page for ads, but build your organic audience around yourself.

How do I find time to create content as a founder?

By using systems and tools. My old workflow was a nightmare: find an idea (30 min), write a script (30 min), film and edit (30 min). That's 90 minutes per video. It was totally unsustainable, which is exactly why I built Dalea AI. Now, my process is 30 minutes, tops. Dalea analyzes my profile, suggests ideas based on what's working, and its AI Script Generator writes a full script with a hook, body, and CTA. I just record. Think of AI as leverage, not a replacement.

What if I feel awkward on camera?

Good. It means you're a real person, not some media-trained robot. Authenticity sells way better than polish. The goal is to connect with potential clients, not to look like a perfect influencer. We tested this with 28 creators for my last company—videos with a human face always beat faceless videos in both views and conversions. Your audience wants to see the person behind the business. As Forbes points out, a strong personal brand builds credibility and makes you stand out.

How do I know what content will attract clients?

You stop guessing and start using data. Before I built Dalea, I spent hours every week manually stalking viral videos in my niche—and even in other niches like fitness and beauty—to see what formats and topics were popping off. I'd adapt those ideas for my audience. Dalea just automates all of that. It has a catalog of viral references and a personalized feed that watches relevant profiles for you. It shows you what's already proven to work, so you're not just throwing stuff at the wall.

The System to Stop Guessing and Start Growing

A strategy is useless if you can't execute it, and as a founder, you have zero time. The system to stop guessing and start growing involves using an AI Social Media Agent like Dalea to handle the grunt work—like brainstorming ideas, writing scripts, and analyzing trends—so you can focus on being the face of your brand. It can even show you which of your old videos have viral potential you might have missed.

This is the system that let me scale my content without burning out. Instead of wasting your weekend on content, you can have an AI agent working on your growth 24/7 for $9.90/month. For more on this, check out my post on my startup content plan for 2026.
